“I Finally Have My Life Back”: How Decluttering Changed One New Orleans Client’s Home (and Life)
There’s a certain moment that can happen after years of accumulating things. You look around your home, we mean, really look around, and suddenly everything is there, all the things you’ve glazed over everyday because you’ve become so accustomed to them. You might not recall exactly when you got each thing or how they arrived at their particular spot, but it hits you then that you have a lot of stuff. A kind of discomfort or irritation starts to form in the pit of your stomach, and you realize then and there that instead of supporting your life, your belongings are starting to get in the way of it.
For New Orleans resident Joe, that realization eventually led to a complete transformation of his home and, as he describes it, so much more than that.
“I finally have my life back. The power of letting go is unbelievable.”
Joe first learned about Sorted after our team helped organize his parents’ home. Impressed by what he saw, he reached out with a much larger project of his own, an entire house that needed to be decluttered and organized.
Taking On the Whole House
This wasn’t a matter of just straightening a few closets or finding better storage containers. Joe was ready for a full overhaul. He really wanted to go through his home in a meaningful way and we were there for it. He chose to be actively involved in the process, and over the course of 3 days we worked together methodically.
We helped him sort through and decide what should stay and what he was finally ready to let go of. Items that no longer served a purpose were discarded. A tremendous amount was donated. Finally, the things Joe genuinely wanted to keep were organized and given a proper place.
And gradually, the house began to feel different in the best way possible.
The Unexpected Power of Letting Go
Decluttering is often discussed in practical terms like cleaner counters, organized closets, or less stuff. But Joe noticed something deeper.
“I can live in peace now, and there’s just a different energy in my home.”
With unnecessary belongings gone and everything else in its place, he felt at ease in his home. Moreover, he also found it easier to think.
“Everything is clean, and I can think clearly,” he said. “I’m more productive.”
That connection is one of the reasons thoughtful home organization can have such an impact. When you’re no longer constantly seeing piles that need attention, searching for things you know you own, or mentally cataloging unfinished organizing projects, your home can begin to feel restorative again.
For Joe, the change was significant enough that he described it simply in this way:
“I got my life back.” Hear the relief in his voice in his testimony below.
Is Professional Organizing Worth the Investment?
Joe was also candid about something many people consider before hiring a professional organizer — cost.
“Sorted isn’t the cheapest out there,” he said. “But at the same time, how can you put a price on your life and in my case, getting my life back?”
For him, the value wasn’t simply having someone make his home look better. It was having an experienced team help move a large, potentially overwhelming project forward efficiently. The result was a home with less excess, better systems, and a place for everything he chose to keep. In fact, for Joe it was just icing on the cake when the project ultimately came in under budget and was completed faster than originally anticipated, largely due to Joe’s availability and quick decisions.
More Than an Organized Home
Perhaps what stands out most about Joe’s experience is that he rarely leaves reviews at all, good or bad. This time, he felt strongly enough about the experience to actually leave one. He described the Sorted team as professional, kind, considerate and efficient. By the end of the project, he considered the team friends.
His recommendation to anyone feeling overwhelmed by their own home is simple:
“If you need organizing in your home, contact Sorted.”
Joe realized somewhere along the way that organizing isn’t really about creating a picture-perfect pantry or beautifully arranged closet (although those are nice too). Sometimes it’s about removing what you no longer need so you have more room for the life you actually want to live.
And as Joe discovered, letting go can feel incredibly good.
