The Mid-Year Home Reset: 5 Areas to Refresh Before Fall

By the middle of the year, most of us have settled into our routines, and so has the clutter. The systems that felt effortless in January may not be working quite as well anymore. Summer is the perfect opportunity to pause, reassess, and make a few small changes before the busy fall season arrives.

At Sorted, we always remind our clients that organization isn't a one-time project. It's an ongoing process of editing, maintaining, and adjusting your home to fit your life. A mid-year reset doesn't have to be overwhelming. In fact, some of the biggest improvements come from refreshing just a few key spaces.

1. Refresh Your Pantry

Summer schedules often mean more snacks, more entertaining, and less structured meals. Take a few minutes to toss expired items, consolidate duplicates, wipe down shelves, and restock the foods your family actually reaches for.

It's also a great time to rethink your pantry zones. If you're constantly moving things around to find what you need, your pantry may simply need a better system, not more containers.

2. Edit Kids' Toys

Before birthdays, holidays, and the back-to-school season arrive, spend some time going through toys with your children.

Donate items they've outgrown, recycle broken toys, and rotate toys that haven't been played with in a while. Kids often rediscover "new" favorites simply because they haven't seen them in months.

Remember: fewer toys often lead to more creative play and make cleanup much easier.

3. Revisit Your Closets

Have you actually worn everything hanging in your closet this summer?

Mid-year is the perfect time to let go of pieces that no longer fit, no longer suit your style, or simply aren't getting worn. As organizers, we often remind clients that closets should reflect your current lifestyle, not the one you had years ago.

Creating breathing room now also makes transitioning into fall much easier.

4. Tackle Paper Clutter

Paper has a way of piling up without us even noticing.

Sort through mail, recycle old magazines, shred documents you no longer need, and create simple categories for anything worth keeping.

If you don't already have one, designate a single "incoming papers" spot rather than allowing paperwork to spread across kitchen counters and desks.

5. Reset Your Linen Closet

Linen closets quietly become catch-all storage areas.

Take everything out, match sheet sets, donate worn towels, and refold items so they're easy to see and access. We recommend storing complete sheet sets together and keeping only the number of towels and blankets your household realistically uses.

A few small changes can make this often overlooked space much more functional.

A mid-year reset isn't about making your home perfect. It's about taking a moment to evaluate what's working, what isn't, and making small adjustments before life gets even busier.

By refreshing just a few key spaces, you'll create systems that are easier to maintain through the rest of summer and into the fall.

If you've been feeling overwhelmed by clutter or struggling to keep up with your home, you don't have to tackle it alone. At Sorted, we help families create functional, personalized organizing systems that make everyday life easier, one space at a time.

Here's to a fresh start for the second half of the year!
