Fridge + Freezer Decluttering: Prep for Summer, Not Just Storm Season
In New Orleans if you’re not lucky enough to have a generator, nothing is worse than cleaning out a fully stocked refrigerator post hurricane. The smell, let alone the realization of all the wasted food and costly groceries that unfortunately must be tossed, is the definition of throwing money away! More than likely there’s also a few surprises of long forgotten food you wished you’d eaten if only you knew it was there.
DON’T WAIT FOR HURRICANE SEASON TO CLEAN OUT YOUR FRIDGE
Organized Fridges and Freezers Save Time and Money. Organizing your fridge and freezer helps you know what you have, reducing food waste and saving money by preventing overbuying.
Malik Mingo of WWL’s Great Day Louisiana specifically requested help cleaning out his fridge and everyone can relate! Watch Victoria share some tips and tricks to ensure no food (or money) goes to waste in your refrigerator.
The more often you do it, the easier it will be and less daunting of a task. We recommend cleaning out your fridge weekly. Try tying it to another Sunday ritual, like meal prep. Remove everything, wipe down shelves, and check what you have. This helps minimize food waste by allowing you to prioritize what needs to be eaten next. For the freezer, we recommend doing a thorough reorganization every three to four months.

Containment and Categorization Are Key
Using labeled containers for categories like meat, vegetables, and desserts in the freezer, or snacks and produce in the fridge, helps consolidate items and makes everything easy to find. Label them clearly so you know what’s inside, and rotate items to ensure older food is used first.
Grouping like items together into zones means less digging and more clarity. Use clear bins for small items like condiments, but always leave space for larger things like leftovers or pizza boxes. Make room for watermelon! 🍉 Summer's favorite fruit deserves a spot, too.
Keep It Functional, Not Overloaded. Containment is helpful, but balance is essential. Don’t pack your fridge so tightly that you can't see what’s inside or access what you need. A designated shelf for bulkier items keeps things flowing.
Make it kid-friendly by creating a lower shelf or bin just for them. Think grab-and-go snacks and drinks. It encourages independence and keeps the rest of your fridge from being ransacked.
Summer is the perfect time to lighten up, not just your schedule, but your fridge and freezer too! Whether you’re prepping for a hurricane or a backyard BBQ, a well-organized fridge means less waste, less stress, and more room for the good stuff (like 🍉). A little maintenance goes a long way—so don’t wait for a storm to get started. Your future self will thank you.
