Bathroom Organization 101

I like my bathroom because…

It awakens me.  The natural sunlight that filters through the window beckons me to greet the morning.

It transforms me.  It’s where I get to put my best face forward at the beginning of the day.

It relaxes me.  I get “me time” in my bubble bath after a long day’s work.

Just as long as I ignore the clutter…

We know, ignorance is bliss!  However, if you’re like us, you know there’s always room to improve, the bathroom being an ideal place for change, due to the manageable space and relatively familiar items that are usually in consistent rotation.  For most, this will allow more focus on organizing and less on editing.   Need a hands-on tutorial?  Let’s walk into your bathroom as we show you the issues and the solutions to fix them.

Possible storage spaces

  • Vanity base cabinet with drawers

  • Medicine cabinet

  • Shelves along the wall

  • Shower ledge

  • Sink counter

Most bathrooms have a few storage areas, but most still lack ample space to store things.  Vanity base cabinets, no matter the size, present the challenge of storing items due to the sink’s drain pipe configuration.  Drawers are almost never utilized to their potential, especially those that are tall and deep.  The medicine cabinet, due to its size and shelf placement, limits what can be placed inside.  The sink counter can be another place to store items, if it can be considered as one.

At first glance…

  • Overfilled drawers and cabinets

  • Messy shelves

  • Cluttered counter

  • Random display of items on ledge and floor of shower

We know it’s easy to have things scattered about; besides, you know it’s going to be used in the bathroom and staying where it’s at is just too convenient.  Right??  If it were anyone else, this may be a plausible response, but we’re going to tell you that organization will rescue your bathroom from the state that it is in currently to one where you can see and locate everything clearly, with more room to spare.  And who wouldn’t want more room?

After a double take…

  • Unrelated items in the same space

  • Expired items

  • Nearly empty product containers

  • Duplicates of items

What’s the solution to these issues?  Begin with editing, keeping what you definitely use and tossing/donating what you don’t.  Remove remaining items from containers so they don’t take up space.  Decide whether or not to keep expired items.  Categorize items to help with proper placement.  Consolidate items if there are duplicates, if possible.

Ok, the hard task is done.  Now for the fun part!  Here are the products we love using for those designated areas or specific items:

Under sink/shelvesThe Home Edit 17-piece collection of acrylic bins and turntable.  Various size bins can stack or be used as inserts inside each other.  Modular design allows for situating around that hard-to-organize drain pipe area.  Using the turntable in corners helps for easy reach of items when it’s all the way in the back.  Works great on shelves as well.

Inside drawers/medicine cabinet: The Home Edit bin drawer organizers come in small, medium, and large and are the same ones used as inserts in their 17-piece collection.  Stackable to fully maximize use of those tall and deep drawers, but just as functional unstacked in short drawers, down to the last nook and cranny.  Small bins may fit on shelves of that challenging medicine cabinet, so give it a try!

Bathroom countermDesign’s 5-piece canister set with air-tight wooden lids for decanting cotton balls, cotton swabs, or bath salts, bidding farewell to residual items in those bulky containers and saying hello to a decorative display on the bathroom counter.

Toothbrush: No introduction needed to Target’s tried-and-true double-sectioned toothbrush holder.

Hair tools:  Hair tools all tangled and not quite attainable?  Worry no more.  Welcome Niubee’s hair tool acrylic tray.  Envision your blow dryer, curling iron, and styling brush conveniently compartmentalized and ready when you need them.  Safely cools down in individual stainless-steel cups, preventing heat transfer to sensitive items.  And with you in mind, a built-in storage area for small toiletries.

Shower essentials:  All those bottles laying amiss around the bathroom ledge and floor can all live together now in the Umbra flexible shower caddy.  Flexible silicon bands along two-tier shelves securely hold even those 32fl oz bottles upright or upside down in bottle “collars” to dispense every last drop.  Convenient niches along the sides hang razors or loofahs while an efficient draining system prevents moisture buildup.  Easily mounts over your shower head or shower curtain rod via smartly designed flexible mounting hooks.
